None of this would have happened without this family. Jimmy Is the community push that made this happen. He never took no for an answer and make sure our kids had boats for that first day on the water back in 2001. His son Denis Judge, Manhasset Class of 2003, was one of the first rowers to ever take up an oar in town, he also coached and continued his rowing career at Fordham university. He was a captain and leader of the team and still to this day has an award named after him - “The Judge leadership award”.
Dan Burch is one of the early benefactors of this program that made sure we had everything we needed for early success. He was a community leader and advocate in making sure Manhasset Crew got on the map in the Northeast. Pat Burch was our first official Crew lady! She was a tireless volunteer and made sure every Hotel, Bus, and chuckwagon was ready to go. She organized the first chuckwagon and tent and made sure the organization ran smoothly. Katie, Manhasset Class of 2005, and Mackenzie, Manhasset Class of 2007, rowed lightweight in the early years of the program. They were instrumental in putting Manhasset Crew on the national scene with semi final performances at Stotesbury Cup and Scholastic nationals within the first three years of the program. The boat house that we roll out of today would not be here if it wasn’t for the Burch family.
Katherine began rowing her sophomore year of high school and came to us with a background in winter sports. She quickly took to the water and stroked the women’s lightweight eight that finished 7th at the Stotesbury Cup. From high school she continued her career at the University of Wisconsin where she was team captain and a two time national champion. She is currently still involved in sports as an athletic trainer for the University of Pittsburgh.
Nick did not begin rowing until his senior year of high school. He came to us with a background in football and wrestling. In his novice season he excelled and became a member of the varsity four and lead them to a semi final performance in the New York state championships. He continued his rowing career at Temple University where he won a national championship. After graduation he came back to Manhasset Crew to coach his alma mater, and is now finishing up his fellowship as a osteopathic doctor.
